Greener Thumb App UX/UI Design

A plant care assistant for those who struggle to keep their plants alive.

Indoor plants are a popular way to decorate and add life to a space, but many people don't have the knowledge to care for these plants properly and get stuck in a cycle of purchasing beautiful greenery only to watch it die. This often result in them either giving up on plant ownership entirely or spending more on continually replacing sick or dead plants.

Through this independent design project, I set out to bridge this knowledge gap by creating Greener Thumb, a plant care assistant that transforms plant anxiety into plant confidence. My research began with comprehensive user interviews and journey mapping to understand the emotional and practical challenges of plant ownership. This revealed that users needed support not just during active care routines, but throughout the entire plant ownership lifecycle—from initial selection through ongoing maintenance and problem-solving when issues arise.

The resulting app design centers on four core components: a personalized plant catalog, individualized care recommendations, diagnostic tools for plant health issues, and a user profile that adapts suggestions based on lifestyle and experience level. Through iterative design and two rounds of usability testing with four participants, I refined the user experience to focus on photo-based plant identification and care guidance. The visual design embraces a clean, playful aesthetic with custom illustrations that make plant care feel approachable and enjoyable rather than intimidating.

Discovering User Needs

I began by mapping the many different factors related to indoor plant ownership (such as some of the motivations for purchasing plants and aspects of a plant care routine) to brainstorm where my app could help.

Next, I interviewed a user in the app’s target demographic and constructed a proto-persona, Emma, and customer journey map based on the information I gathered.

Translating User Needs Into Features

I developed a story map to chart the details of four components of the app: the profile, personal plant catalog, recommended care routine, and diagnostic/monitoring tool for healing a sick plant. Based on the requirements outlined in the story mapping exercise, I then created user flows for several key actions in the app.I chose to focus on the process of adding a plant into your collection by taking a photo for the next phases of the project.

Designing, Testing, Iterating

As I iterated on the design, I produced low-, medium-, and high-fidelity prototypes and conducted 2 rounds of usability testing with 2 users in each round.

Branding

I wanted to give the app a clean, playful feel that would make the experience fun and enjoyable for users, since they would be using it during their leisure time. I also drew three custom illustrations to add character.
