R+C Website Redesign

Rutherford + Chekene, a structural engineering firm, needed a modern digital presence to support their expanding recruiting efforts and business development initiatives. Their existing website no longer reflected the quality and innovation of their engineering work, creating a disconnect between their professional reputation and online presentation. This comprehensive redesign project was structured from the outset to span multiple phases, with a planned handoff to external consultants for specialized development work. The final result gives R+C a fresh, modern digital presence that positions them as a forward-thinking 21st century engineering firm.

As initial project lead, I guided the strategic foundation through competitive analysis and low-fidelity wireframing before handing the project off to an external web design consultant to design and build the 1.0 version of the website. After completing the UC Berkeley Extension certificate program in UX Design, I returned to the project. Building upon the visual language established by the web design consultant, I designed and built out the expanded 2.0 version of the website.

My scope for the 2.0 phase encompassed significant redesigns of 9 existing pages and the creation of 7 entirely new pages, each optimized for desktop, tablet, and mobile experiences. Beyond visual design, I expanded my technical capabilities by learning Webflow to personally implement the designs. The project also included custom icon development, with 14 unique illustrations created specifically for the About Us and Careers sections to enhance R+C's visual storytelling.

Process

Discover

First, we conducted a competitive analysis of a variety of journaling and dream journaling apps, evaluating their strengths and weaknesses in areas such as user interface, features, and user experience. Our research highlighted several opportunities for One Voice Journal, such as incorporating prompts, tags, filtering, and text formatting.

Structure

We held a team white boarding session to explore how the new site should be structured. With the existing site structure and competitor research for reference, we iterated on several different possible configurations until we finally arrived at the final version of the new site map.

Design Phase 1

To communicate our team’s vision for the new website, I prepare initial conceptual wireframes of key pages then met with my supervisor to get feedback and made updates accordingly. Once they were ready, these wireframes were given to our website design/development consultant who referenced them to develop a new visual identity for the website transferred content from the previous website to the new one.

Design Phase 2

After the web design/development consultant developed an updated visual identity for the new website and transferred over content from the previous website, I returned to the project and built upon that work. In total, I significantly redesigned 9 pages of the website and designed 7 new pages. I successfully implemented all of my designs in Webflow.

Icon Design

For the updated About Us and Careers pages, I developed a total of 14 custom icons using Adobe Illustrator.
